We have been invited to join an interesting lecture in Portsmouth on Saturday 8th February so I have booked rooms at the Royal Maritime Hotel just outside Portsmouth Naval base with walking access to the Historic Dockyard museums and shopping at Gun Wharf (HMS Vernon as was)...

Bob Lane, the OIC Disposal & Reserve Ships Organisation at Portsmouth Naval Base.

An ex RN Officer it has taken a lot to persuade him (he says he is a shy man!!)  to speak to our group but in recent years he has been responsible for the disposal of 149 Naval and RFA vessels and intends to cover such matters as:

• The decisions on whether to scrap old ships, sink them or sell them to a foreign navy.

• Why some ships are scrapped quickly but other sit around for long periods of time.

• What needs to be removed from a ship before it’s disposed of and what happens to it.

• How ship breaking is costed

• How a ship is broken up, how is it towed to the breakers and what crew is needed aboard during the tow.

 

I have reserved rooms at the Maritime Club in Portsmouth from Friday 7th - Sunday 9th February (or stay til Monday?) 

 

Im sure you have other interests in Portsmouth or can be entertained by two other former Naval Officers happy to chat to you….a very interesting ex Lt Cdr Mike Schmidt who after training at Dartmouth and fighting in the Gulf, went on to serve with the German Navy . In civilian life he has served in the Police …served a prison sentence - before becoming a Bus driver. It wont be boring I promise. I can also entertain you with some naval yarns from yesteryear that MAY be of interest?
